Education and Disability

A major problem facing persons with disabilities in the job market is the fact that they typically are not as well educated as persons without disabilities. According to a study of the U.S. Bureau of the Census, for the 26 million adults between the ages of 25 and 64 who have a disability, 7.8 million have not finished high school. Another 10 million have completed high school, but have had no college education. Only 8.1 million have at least some college education. The picture for adults with more severe disabilities is even bleaker. For the 12 million adults between the ages 25 and 64 who have a severe disability: - 5 million have not finished high school - 4.3 million have completed high school, but have had no college education - Only 2.7 million have had at least some college education.
