EEOC's Essential Job Function Analysis

The EEOC's regulations identify three types of job functions that may be considered ''essential'' for purposes of the ADA: (1) The reason the position exists is to perform the particular function; (2) There are a limited number of employees available among whom the performance of the job function can be distributed; and (3) The function is highly specialized so that the incumbent in the position is hired for his or her expertise or ability to perform the particular function.
